Staircase Designs

From the clean lines, warm wood tones and traditional look of Craftsman-style staircases to the sleek details and modern appeal of industrial-style staircases, staircase design sets the tone for your residence. If you want more refined details, consider a classic staircase with wrought iron balusters, traditional balusters and other features to grace your entrance. Spiral staircases create a unique and eye-catching design that works well in small or open floor plans.

Building a Staircase

There are many different steps to creating the perfect staircase, all of which are important to the functionality of the staircase as well as its beauty. Stair treads and stair lifts are the steps to the higher levels of your home. Handrails or balusters allow you to hold onto something as you go up and down the stairs, while stair railings prevent falls from the side of the stairs. You'll also need balusters-supporting railings, a major player in safety and other styles-as well as newel posts, which are the main pillars at the front of the stairs and essential for supporting the flight of stairs.

Stair materials

Most staircases are constructed of wood. Red oak is the most common wood choice and is easy to stain, sand and polish, so you can easily customize your staircase. Other options include white oak (which provides water resistance), pine, Brazilian cherry and maple. Vinyl options for stair treads and risers are also available. If your staircase has a modern vibe, consider a modern stair railing made of stainless steel cables or glass and metal handrails to complete the look. Besides, don't forget to use stair nose that are unified with the style of the stairs.

Stylish staircases are not limited to the interior of your home. With an outdoor stair railing, you can also enhance the steps to your front porch or back deck and improve the containment of your home.
